Single tickets are purchased immediately prior to each trip and are not based upon timetables. The Cliff Railway operates continuously, and waiting times are therefore minimal. We only accept contactless or chip and pin card payments. Children under 4 travel free.
There are public car parks and street parking in both Lynton and Lynmouth. Lynmouth has significantly less parking and gets busy in peak seasons. It’s much better to park in Lynton and use us as the most beautiful park and ride option in the UK to reach the village of Lynmouth below. Lynton Car Parks are at Bottom Meadow, Cross Street and the Valley of the Rocks. Lynmouth Car Parks are at Upper & Lower Lyndale, The Esplanade and Watersmeet.
The secret to avoiding queues – sssshhh! The Cliff Railway can be accessed at either the top station in Lynton or the bottom station in Lynmouth. At busy times the bottom station is very popular and queues can occur at peak times. To reduce waiting and avoid queues we recommend access via the top station in Lynton in the afternoon or planning your visit earlier in the morning or towards the end of the day – but don’t tell everyone!
We want everybody to enjoy our cliff railway with plans in place to accommodate all we can, although, maintaining the railway’s original Victorian charm does present some modern day access challenges.
Due to the restricted access and narrow Victorian carriages, wheelchairs will need to be folded. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate mobility scooters or larger wheelchairs. The carriages are 540mm wide at the narrowest point with three steps in each carriage and restricted seating at busy times.
Our drivers will offer reasonable assistance, but we request that the folding and loading of wheelchairs is directly managed by members of your party. The access paths have a slight gradient but are manageable by most wheelchairs with assistance. There are no steps within the site other than stepping onto the Cliff Railway at the top station, there are however, three steps within the carriages themselves but with handrails. The Cliff Top Café has level access with no steps. Assistance Dogs are permitted to travel for free – woof woof.
For groups or customers with particular requirements, and for further specific access information, please either view our full accessibility guide by clicking the link below, or do please contact us prior to your visit.
The Cliff Top Café is situated at the Cliff Railway top station in Lynton and offers amazing views across Lynmouth Bay with inside service, takeaway service, and both outside and inside seating, fresh food, cakes and hot drinks. Dogs are also welcome.
Due to the narrow Victorian carriages pushchairs will need to be folded. Pushchairs can be left and stored if required. Cycles are permitted (but not e-bikes or e-scooters) during quiet times or at the discretion of our ticket staff and are subject to an additional ticket charge.
For advanced large group bookings and ticket sales for coach parties, tours, school visits, or similar then please contact us ahead of your visit, and we can assist with advanced ticket sales. Please note, group bookings are still subject to queueing.
The Exmoor National Park Information Centre is situated in the Pavilion on the Esplanade at Lynmouth next to the Cliff Railway. Both towns have cafés, restaurants, pubs, accommodation, post offices, chemists, gift shops and convenience stores.
Dogs are always welcome to take their owners for a ride on the Cliff Railway. We do take a small charge for doggy travel (lapdogs no charge) and they must be kept on a lead and ride inside the carriage at all times. Assistance Dogs travel for free. Water for dogs is provided in bowls at the site – woof woof!
There is free and open access Wi-Fi across the site, the Cliff Top Café and at the top and bottom stations. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share your photos and experience with us.
The Victorians didn’t provide us with on site public toilets. The closest are situated in Bottom Meadow Car Park, by the Town Hall in Lynton, The Memorial Hall, Lyndale Car Park in Lynmouth & also opposite the cricket field at the Valley of Rocks.
